On Aug.21, 2024, Kookmin University (KMU) hosted its second-semester graduation ceremony, commemorating the graduation of more than 200 international students and signifying the end of their impactful academic journey. The event showcased the varied experiences of students as they embraced new cultures and overcame obstacles, ranging from language barriers to academic challenges. Let’s hear some intriguing tales of their time at KMU through interviews with THE KOOKMIN REVIEW.

Q1. What was your most notable experience
at KMU?

The “practice of creative broadcast” class that I took during my first year left a strong impression. Despite my limited Korean ability, the dedicated professor made the online learning experience lively and helped each student on an individual basis. My team members, all coming from different countries, were very sociable and active. They also became my first close friends from abroad at school.

Q2. What was your biggest difficulty as a foreign student?

I found that the pace of life here is quite fast and people are somewhat distant. I did not have many friends either, because most people were busy with their studies and works. So, I felt lonely for a time while attending school. I think other foreign students also felt a little bit shocked and lonely at first.

Q3. Do you have any tips to overcome that?

Studying abroad is challenging as it involves balancing studying and doing a part-time job to cover living expenses. Despite these demands, I believe it is important to make friends and expand your network for academic and emotional support.

Q1. What do you like most about your major?

I was thrilled to be studying fine arts at KMU. I had the freedom to paint my own works in the large, creative studio, where we each had our own personal workspace equipped with modern painting tools and facilities. Each semester, my art was also displayed in school exhibitions and competitions, which made me proud and motivated me a lot.

Q2. If you could go back in time, is there something you would like to do that you regret not doing?

Honestly, studying at KMU has given me the best experiences of my life. I have made great friends, gained valuable knowledge, and enjoyed exciting festivals. I would never want to lose these memories.

Q3. Do you have any tips for studying at KMU?

Do not be shy or hesitate to ask for help. If you are unsure about anything, reach out to your friends, professors, and especially the Center for International Student Services (CISS). Everyone will be happy to assist you.

(Korean as a Global Language, Japan)

Q1. How do you feel about your past four years of university?

Today’s graduation ceremony marks the end of four memorable years. While I feel happy, I also have a sense of emptiness and regret, especially due to the two years I spent studying online and the limited campus activities that were available during COVID-19.

Q2. What do you love the most about KMU?

Definitely the facilities. My favorite place is the Bugak Hall. I took most of my major and required courses there. On the first floor, there is a cafeteria, coffee shop, study areas, and lounge especially for female students. The fifth floor has a self-study room, which I often visited during exams. In front of the building is where I frequently got to see our school's famous ‘cat idols’ too.

Q3. What do you think KMU should improve?

I hope KMU can invest more in the shuttle bus service, such as increasing the number of trips or extending the routes, so that students can get to campus more conveniently.

Q1. Did you feel satisfied while studying at KMU?

I believe that KMU offers fantastic support for students. In my department, we need to use various costly techniques, but the school prioritizes quality and academic achievement. They always made sure that we had the required facilities for practical learning.

Q2. What is your best memory from KMU?

One of my most unforgettable moments at KMU was the soccer games on the school field with my friends. Now that we have all graduated and each of us has our own plans for personal development, it will be difficult to create such beautiful memories together anymore.

Q3. Can you give some advice for your juniors?

Strive to do your best. While you may enjoy university life in your first year, it is important to identify and pursue your career goals promptly. Time waits for no one. As these international graduates step into the next chapter of their lives, their stories highlight the profound impact that studying abroad had on them. The challenges they faced and the successes they achieved serve as a testament to their adaptability and perseverance, marking a promising start to their future endeavors. We wish them the best!
