The Painting Major offers an open educational environment where students learn to appreciate the values and achievements of visual arts that have developed throughout the history of modern art. Students are also encouraged to explore innovative artistic experimentation and pursue new creative possibilities. By nurturing students’ creative potential and critical thinking skills, the Painting Major aims to guide students to grow as mature artists with the potential to contribute to society as fine artists, curators, theorists, art managers, and educators, as well as in other capacities, based on their unique individual capabilities. To achieve this goal, the Painting Major instructs students to acquire skills to express with the paining medium and interpretate it in a creative manner. Students are also encouraged to explore various experimentations by employing such diverse mediums as drawing, print media, photography, video, new media, and installation, thereby learning by experiencing the relational characteristics of different mediums and possible ways to express. With a particular effort to balance student’s ability in art practice and theory, the Painting Major also provides advanced courses on art history and theory, with which students would appreciate art in a broader socio-cultural context. The Painting Major offers an embracive intellectual environment in which students would enhance their reflections on images in relation to space and time, thereby pursuing unique and progressive ways to create.
