Professor Shin Ju Young of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Kookmin University received the Minister of Climate, Energy, and Environment Award on December 31, 2025, in recognition of his contributions to the ‘Korea Meteorological Administration Impact Forecast Collaboration’. Impact forecasting is the KMA's forecasting system that communicates the varying impacts of the same meteorological phenomenon based on scientific data and analysis, depending on the timing, location, and social conditions of its occurrence. Professor Shin received this commendation for his leading research and collaboration in the field of heatwave impact forecasting, which significantly contributed to enhancing the forecasting system.

Professor Shin Ju Young currently serves as a professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Kookmin University. He gained practical research experience in meteorology, climate, and hydrology during his five-year tenure at the Korea Meteorological Administration Research Institute. He also serves as a technical advisor to major public institutions such as the Korea Authority of Land & Infrastructure Safety and the Han River Flood Control Office, providing expert counsel on climate change response, disaster prevention, and water resource management policy formulation, thereby leading collaboration between academia and the public sector.

Professor Shin Joo Young is actively conducting interdisciplinary research spanning meteorology and hydrology, including analyzing rainfall characteristics under climate change and developing AI prediction models based on water resource data.
The Convergence Water Resources Laboratory operated by Professor Shin Joo Young has garnered external recognition for Kookmin University's research capabilities and technological competitiveness through achievements such as winning the Gold Prize at the KSCE 2025 Capstone Design Competition, receiving the Excellent Paper Award at the 2025 Korean Society of Civil Engineers Convention, and publishing SCIE papers.

This award holds significant meaning as it officially recognizes Professor Shin Joo Young's academic and public contributions at the government level, particularly his efforts to give back to society through research achievements in establishing science-based impact forecasting systems and responding to climate disasters.

Professor Shin Joo Young plans to continue expanding science-based research and public collaboration that contributes to climate change response and disaster mitigation. He will strive to advance technology for public safety and building a sustainable society.
