Students from the Department of AI-Big Data Convergence Management at Kookmin University (Kim Cha-mi, Park Eun-woo, Baek Kyung-rin, Lee Ji-min, and Pyeon Seo-yeon) won the Excellence Award at the 2024 Counter-Disinformation Challenge, a competition for university students to come up with ideas for countering disinformation, hosted by the Cognitive Information Research Center at the KAIST Institute for Security Convergence. The award ceremony was held on December 11 at the KAIST Munji Campus.

This competition was designed to raise awareness of the social and national threats posed by the creation and spread of false information and to explore effective countermeasures. A total of 62 teams, consisting of 135 undergraduate and graduate students from across the country, participated in the competition, which was fiercely contested. Eleven teams were ultimately awarded prizes.

The students won the Excellence Award for their innovative idea related to preventing the creation of deepfake videos in the “Ideas for Countering Disinformation” category. They received high praise for their proposal of an AI-based core idea that can determine whether a video to be created is a sexually explicit video before the creation of a deepfake video based on AI technology.

“We planned this competition to prevent the spread of false information, and the ideas submitted this time will be used as data for developing technologies to prevent and detect the spread of false information and for policy recommendations,” said Bae Joong-myun, director of the Cognitive Information Research Center at the KAIST Institute for Security Convergence. It was very encouraging that the participating college students thought about creative countermeasures using AI and advanced science and technology, and various technical approaches stood out. We plan to continue to hold related competitions to contribute to the search for practical measures to respond to the complex threats facing the country and society.”

The Department of AI Big Data Convergence Management at Kookmin University is training talents with the ability to solve problems based on AI and data, and this achievement has proven the students' outstanding academic capabilities and creative thinking.
