During the university festival from May 21~May25, the student body of Kookmin University has prepared an event for sharing with the neglected in the community. The student body provides hand-made foods in conjunction with Korea Leukemia New Life Supporter (KLNLS) to help needy children who suffer from Leukemia. Many students, professors, and facultygave their supportfor this event. Kim, Sook-hyun, the President of KLNLS said:“This is the first time to receive an offer from a university to help children. All the proceeds from the event will be donated to the children suffering from Leukemia living near Kookmin University on May 25th.”
In addition, the Jewelry&Craft Exhibition prepared bystudents majoring in Jewelry&Craft Design has been selling items for donation for 14 years, beginning in 1999. They submit pieces they made for this event. Also, artists who have graduated from Kookmin University exhibited their art pieces voluntarily, as this is the tradition of the School of Art. Even though they were student’s artwork, they were only displayed after passing a screening by the professors. Won, Jae-ryong (Junior, Jewelry Design) said:“There were about 150 people including graduate school and exchange students for the event this year, displaying 500 pieces. It’s a school event, but there are many people to see and buy our craft &jewelry works. We worked hard to make pieces for children with the thinking that it’s kind of a talent donation.” Earrings, necklaces, and bracelets are good sellers for students. Faculty members usually purchased tea sets, pottery, and design goods. Artists’ work also received attention from people even they were at a high price. Kim, Ji-hyung (Junior, Business) who looked around the festival said:“These works were made by our school’s friends and there are a lot of pieces more excellent than ready-made. So I stop by here every year. Also, it’s nice in that all the profits will be used for needy children rather than for liquor or food sales.”
Park, Shin-ho (Senior, Department of Politics) the student body president said:“These days, university festivalsaretainted by budget waste, alcoholic drink, and expendable events.I think it will be good for everyone if students make festival events to help other people voluntarilyin an educational way.”
