‘Talk About a Structure of White Porcelain’ by Sang Woo, Jaen was nominated for the grand prize in the 7th annual Cheongju International Craft Biennale. The work was well received as a project of delicately precast art perfection work. It especially expresses a pure form of a Korean pot from the Joseon dynasty, reflecting simplicity, the inner mind and nobility – a unique tradition which is found only in Korea.
The Cheongju International Craft Biennale organizing committee selects the finalists from among 185 works, which were already selected on 13th and 14th then they select a grand prize, 4 first prizes, 6 second prizes, 5 third prizes, and 8 special prizes, 161 selections. The grand prize will be awarded $30,000 US as prize money during the opening ceremony.
The judges focused on creativity and artistry as well as beauty, rational value and necessity.
Stephan von der Schuleburg, who is one of judges, says that because of the crisis situation caused by the detribalization of humanity and a longing about new extravagance, we need to get back our origins and thus we have selected works having those points. The judges also gave them more points on the concept of beauty, such as Korea’s simpleness and grandness because this biennale is being held in Korea.
This ceremony is planning to be held on the 21st of September at 10:30 am in Cheongju. Before the opening of the Cheongju International Craft Biennale, there will be an exhibition of the 185 dominating works as well as all of the prize-winning works.
