Students from the Department of Automotive Engineering at Kookmin University (President Jeong Seung-ryul) will hold an exhibition at the Kookmin University Art Gallery from May 1 (Thursday) to May 6 (Tuesday) for six days. This exhibition, subtitled “The Dynamics of Lines: Drawing Emotions,” showcases the fusion of engineering and art. The exhibition is being planned by artist Kim Jin-woo, with Professor Lee Dong-heon (Department of Automotive Engineering) serving as the lecture instructor and exhibition director, and is considered a good example of interdisciplinary creative collaboration.

Now in its seventh year, this event showcases drawings created by students enrolled in the Automotive Adventure Design course, which is a major course in the Department of Automotive Engineering. The exhibition demonstrates the achievements of interdisciplinary education that fosters both an understanding of engineering design and aesthetic sensibility, adding significance as a pioneering example of the fusion of art and science in domestic engineering and science courses. Since its first event in 2017, the exhibition has been held in a relay format with the Incheon Science and Arts Academy (IASA) starting in 2024.

Every year, the exhibition invites renowned artists from Korea and abroad to participate in a collaborative exhibition, providing visitors with a unique exhibition space where art and engineering come together. This year, in particular, the exhibition features works created through collaboration with students from the Department of Oriental Painting at Hongik University, adding a new layer of meaning to the exhibition. Professor An Jin (Hongik University Department of Oriental Painting) stated, “Through the fusion of engineering and art, we aim to break down the boundaries between creativity and technology and propose new visual experiences.”

Art critic Lee Joo-hee commented, “The drawings by automotive engineering students, East Asian painting students, and contemporary artists all originate from the same style, yet they show an emotional and academic evolution. I hope viewers will experience the diverse dynamics of lines, such as homogeneity, difference, repetition, and variation, in these drawings, which embody the efforts of various fields to elevate and beautify life.”

This exhibition has been organized by the Future Automotive Project Team of the Innovation and Convergence College at Kookmin University (Director Shin Sung-hwan). Professor Lee Dong-hyun stated, “Through drawing-based learning, we can strengthen spatial perception and metacognitive abilities simultaneously. We will continue to strive for the cultivation of talent equipped with interdisciplinary thinking.”
