On May 22, the Center for International Student Services (CISS) held an event called Yu’ s BBQ Kitchen for the international students who study at Kookmin University (KMU). This event was held at the basketball court next to the Playing Field from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.. It was the third time and the third year in a row that the event was held. The purpose of this event is to encourage and cheer international students on. There were banners at the event field, and on the banners were some welcoming and cheering words for the international students. They read, “Cheer up international students!” “We love you!” “Kookmin families are always cheering you!”.
The KMU president and faculty became chefs and provided barbecue such as lamb skewers, beef, and sausages to students. There were also a number of food trucks serving different foods like grilled chicken skewers and stir-fried noodles, as well as beverages. International students received coupons for food at the CISS, visited the event, exchanged their coupons for barbecue, and other foods and enjoyed the event. During the event, K-pop dance and busking were also performed. KMU’s dance club, “Busta,” and a group of international students performed K-pop dance, and KMU’s bands “December” and “Magenta” performed.
There was also a lottery event to draw in some lucky winners: the international students drew lottery tickets when they received their coupons and those whose numbers selected received gifts.
As with this event, the CISS always does its best to support KMU’s international students. The center helps international students to adapt to academic life in a foreign country and helps them leap toward a global world. There are so many programs and events for international students run by CISS, so please look on its website for information that might be helpful to your school life.
In the meantime, there are some other opinions about Yu’s BBQ Kitchen. Since the event was geared toward international students, Korean students couldn’t participate. Many Korean students said that they also wanted to join the event with international students and socialize with them. Korean students also said that it would be great to host events that both international students and Korean students can enjoy together in the future to bring all of KMU’s students together.
